A Google Maps “mashup” or add-on program, garbagescout.com lets New Yorkers upload photos of objects on the street, and identify them with descriptive keywords. A map is generated showing the location and contents of each find, and the time elapsed since it was added to the database. Users can visit garbagescout.com to find free items nearby and to advertise those that they would otherwise throw out. James Nachlin is a computer programmer. He created garbagescout.com to get rid of clutter in his apartment.
