Les voies ferrées qui traversent les villes industrialisées peuvent constituer des corridors de végétation où poussent les plantes à l’état sauvage. Parcourant de longues distances, les trains génèrent localement des vents puissants et transportent pollen et graines. Les animaux utilisent aussi les voies ferrées pour se déplacer. Les corridors ferroviaires peuvent ainsi présenter une riche biodiversité et, quand on évite de tondre ou de pulvériser d’herbicides la végétation qui y pousse, ils abondent en plantes rares et utiles. Nance Klehm est une artiste et glaneuse établie à Chicago, où elle arpente les voies ferrées de nombreux sites urbains, dont celui du corridor industriel de Kinzie, pour cueillir des plantes comestibles et médicinales.
